FIFA has made available cheaper tickets for its next men's World Cup, which will be held in the summer of 2026 in Canada, United States and Mexicoafter a protest broke out against it last week due to prices.
Fans in national team travel clubs and loyalty programs discovered last week that the cheapest tickets available for next July's final in New Jersey would be priced at more than 4,000 dollars.
However, FIFA announced this Tuesday that 10% of the allocation of participating member associations for each match there will be a price of 60 dollarsincluding the final. This decision was made after several meetings held in Doha (Qatar) in which national federations expressed their concerns about the pricing system.
FIFA faced such criticism from fans, with Football Supporters Europe accusing it of a “monumental betrayal” and urging them to stop their sales process. The allocation –of the member associations– is equivalent to the 8% of stadium capacity by country and by party.
“Demand for tickets has skyrocketed: more than 20 million requests in this last phase. We have listened to the comments and this new category is the right thing to do,” a FIFA official revealed to the dpa agency.
“The associations will have to decide who should receive them. It is a unique tournament and a unique market in the United States, in particular, allowing resale on secondary platforms. The demand is very high“added the same FIFA leader.
Along with his Network of Fans of Disability and InclusionFootball Supporters Europe had already written to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to “condemn” a policy which was said to deny disabled fans access to cheaper category tickets and “sharply deviate” from standard practice.
