The Turkish champions head to Anfield with a 1-0 lead, having secured a second home victory over Liverpool in this season’s competition.
On only two other occasions have Galatasaray avoided defeat on English soil. A thrilling tie at Manchester United ended 3-3 during the 1993-94 season, when Eric Cantona’s late equaliser rescued a draw for the Red Devils. United had led 2-0 inside 14 minutes, but required Cantona’s late leveller after conceding three times to fall behind.
Galatasaray progressed from that tie on away goals after a goalless draw in Istanbul. However, a year later, Gala were thrashed 4-0 in a group stage game at the same venue.
Galatasaray also secured a goalless draw at Liverpool during the 2001-02 second group stage. Both fixtures between the teams ended all square, results that, if repeated, would take the Turkish side through this evening.
