The ball is mourning. The Argentine Juan Ramón Verón, also known as “La Witch,” died on Tuesday at age 81. As a player and coach left his mark, not only in Colombian football, in which he consecrated with Junior de Barranquilla, but also in his native country, with students of La Plata.

Verón made history in national football. He arrived in the country after signing with Junior in 1976 and then assumed the reins of the rojiblanco team as an interim player. His debut on the benches was successful and led the sharks to his first league consecration (1977). Then he played at Cúcuta Deportivo (1978-1979).

“The witch” played as a striker, sometimes from the left and sometimes as second tip. He stood out for his leadership, technique, great vision of the game and his shots with the left leg. In his country, in addition to playing with students in La Plata, he defended the Argentine T -shirt of Quilmes. He also played in Europe, between 1972 and 1975, for Greek Panathinaikos.

He starred in the most glorious era of students. It was part of the squad that conquered three editions of the Copa Libertadores (1968, 1969 and 1970) and an Inter -American (1969). A goal of his, against Manchester United in Old Trafford, made those in La Plata consecrate in the 1968 intercontinental.

“Exceptional footballer, he also knew how to be a compromised trainer and an unavoidable human reference for entire generations. Students today dismisses one of their greatest legends. His legacy, his integrity and example will live forever in the memory of the institution”, were the words with which the club regretted his death.

He retired from football in 1985, at age 41, because of an injury. He also directed. In addition to his two stages in front of Junior – that of the title and a later in 1979 -, he also assumed the reins of the Guatemala national team in 1996 and had a couple of internships in students, where he worked for many years as an advisor.

In the Onceno Platense, one of the greats of Argentine football, Verón played 324 games, and turned 90 goals. Throughout his professional career he registered 544 official matches and 172 annotations. He conquered seven titles, most with the team of his loves.

He had three children and the most recognized was Juan Sebastián Verón, who also had a successful race with the ball. He was nicknamed “La Brujita” in reference to his father and knew how to play in the European elite, belonged to the Argentine National Team – he played three World Cups – and also became a student idol, a club of which he is the current president.

Juan Ramón “La Bruja” Verón died at age 81. He suffered from a progressive deterioration of his health due to renal complications. He was admitted to La Plata since April for a dehydration and renal failure box that aggravated because it had a single kidney.
