Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) lived on Saturday a complicated day in stage 14 of the Italian turn, marked by a massive fall, multiple cuts and an end that benefited a small group of favorites.

Bernal, like Juan Ayuso and Primoz Roglic, crossed the goal with 48 seconds of delay with respect to runners such as Richard Carapaz, Simon Yates and Isaac del Toro, leader of the general classification. Einer Rubio also arrived in that group.

The stage, which left from Treviso and ended in Nova Gorica, was more moved than expected despite being considered a transition day. The rainy rain and nervousness caused a 23 -kilometer goal fall that disorganized several teams. Bernal was affected by the cuts and failed to return to the group of favorites that took advantage of chaos to open differences.

Bernal retained his ninth position in the general classification, but now he is three minutes and 38 seconds from the leader, Isaac del Toro.

Although it did not lose positions, the time assigned could be decisive as the mountain stages intensify. Ahead of him, rivals such as Derek Gee, Damiano Caruso and Antonio Tiberi, who took advantage of the stage to upload positions are consolidated.

The fall also left victims as Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), who said goodbye to his general aspirations for a possible injury. Bernal, on the other hand, must focus on minimizing damage and finding support in his team to continue fighting in a race that remains open, but increasingly demanding.

Stage 14 made it clear that any mistake can cost expensive. The turn enters its decisive week and every second account. For Bernal, champion of the turn in 2021, the next few days will be key if he wants to keep the illusion of returning to the podium of a great return.
