The Ángel Nieto pavilion is the meeting point of the Zamorano sports world and it was especially so this Saturday thanks to the basketball clubs. The visit of CB Coruña and the Catalan Lima Horta made possible an intense day with some unexpected protagonists such as the former CB Zamora player, Mario Aguado, who returned to the city where he lived and was an idol during the years 93 to 95; but there was also a significant return like the one who was also a great blue and white player, Héctor Galán, now as sports director of another of the great Primera FEB clubs, Héctor Galán.
The municipal pavilion recorded one of the best crowds of the season for the CB Zamora-CB Coruña, which was contributed by the nearly two hundred Coruña fans who showed a great sporting spirit both in facing the bad times their team went through, and in assuming the final victory that they enjoyed with their players in one of the corners of the Ángel Nieto.
But the great protagonist of the day was Mario Aguado who returned to Zamora taking advantage of the fact that his daughter Mireia was playing for Lima-Horta in the Challenge League match against Recoletas Zamarat that ended with a clear victory for the Zamoran team. Aguado was accompanied by the team delegate at the time, Antonio Villar; and for the one who was his partner as a player, Juan Ángel. In statements to this newspaper, he recalled that time when CBZ was active in the First Division of national basketball, the first year under the command of Boban Vuckevic and the second in the first edition of the EBA League in which the team, linked to CB Salamanca, almost achieved promotion to the ACB.
“I've seen a lot of people from that time and I've also taken the opportunity to watch my daughter's game,” he said in the stands of the Zamorano Municipal that maintains his connection with basketball because “I still play a little game a week, as long as my knees hold up, we'll be there. It's in a veterans' league.” Aguado recalled that “I was training for a while but when I started working I was not competitive and having two girls I never considered it again.”
Regarding his daughter Mireia Aguado, who scored 10 points against Recoletas (82-55) and was the most valued player on the Barcelona team, Mario Aguado adds that “she is starting her career, I give her advice, she doesn't pay much attention to me, but I try.”
And what things are, Aguado also met at the Ángel Nieto with the coach of Leyma Coruña, Carles Marco, with whom he met more than 30 years ago in the same Zamorano pavilion when they were both players and the Catalan coach played with Jordi LLorens and César Sanmartín in Sant Josep, Joventut's affiliate: “Twenty years old that we were and we came to fight CB Zamora in which he was Mario. “That year we lost the semifinal to be promoted against CB Salamanca that linked Zamora the following year.”
Also in the match against Coruña was another former CBZ player, Héctor Galán, who has made more frequent visits to the city, although this time he was accompanied by the Obradoiro coach, Diego Epifanio, a teammate and good friend of Javier Carnero from Zamora in the national coaching course they took together. Obradoiro will be the rival of the Zamorano team this Tuesday in Santiago.
