La Laguna Tenerife was reunited with victory this Saturday after defeating Río Breogán at home (96-108), with a stellar performance by the Georgian Giorgi Shermadini (18 points, 10 rebounds and 34 PIR credits) and the Canadian international Aaron Doornekamp (20 points and six triples).
The remarkable success of the Canarian team marked the match. Txus Vidorreta's team punished the Galician defense with an offensive display. Breogán, accustomed to living off his success from the three-point line, closed the first quarter without scoring a triple.
That unusual percentage contrasted with that of Tenerife, which was close to 90 percent with six triples. Luis Casimiro tried to stop the aurinegro gale with a timeout (7-20, min.5) that barely had any effect because his rival did not slow down his scoring pace.
The entry of the Croatian Dominik Mavra gave another breath to the Breoganist attack. His team plugged into attack, but between Bruno Fitipaldo and Giorgi Shermadini they held Tenerife, which reached the halfway point of the match with an advantage of eight points (51-59).
The start of the third quarter seemed to be definitive. With a choral game in attack, Tenerife hit its rival. Two triples from Doornekamp and another from Marcelinho Huertas, from the corner after great circulation, put the island team on the scoreboard (55-72, min.24). Casimiro stopped the match. And from the defense his team began to believe in the comeback, despite the fact that Marcelinho Huertas gave oxygen to his team in attack.
Breogán enjoyed two attacks – a three-pointer released by Cook and a counterattack that ended with a loss by Francis Alonso – to get below the ten-point disadvantage barrier. Mavra achieved it shortly after (71-79), but a technical foul on Francis Alonso – for protesting with time running out in the third quarter – and two triples – one from Fitipaldo and the other from Doornekamp – extinguished the Galician reaction and sentenced the duel in favor of the visitors (73-88, min.32).
