However, prior to the match, Everton boss David Moyes showed his deep admiration for his opponents. He said the Gunners are likely the best team in the country right now. He also hit back at critics who have complained about their physical style and set-piece routines. Moreover, he argued that distinct styles of football make the game enjoyable and prevent it from getting boring.

“You are making it sound as if that’s a problem because they are good at set pieces and they are a strong, physical side. He wants to see tactical variations across the competition.

“I would hate to be going to football matches all the time and seeing football played the one way. He noted that Mikel Arteta has moved the team forward significantly to keep them fighting for multiple trophies. Meanwhile, he expressed confidence in the recent form shown by Everton. After back-to-back wins, he believed his players could hold their own against such strong opposition. He focused on the discipline and work rate required to get a result away from home.

<picture></picture>

Arsenal overcome resilient Everton under David Moyes

The Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium proved to be a brutal contest. Everton’s rigid defence frustrated the hosts for most of the match. The Toffees’ reshuffled backline tirelessly limited clear chances for the Gunners. As per reports, Dwight McNeil nearly broke the deadlock in the first half but hit the woodwork. Riccardo Calafiori performed an unbelievable block to deny another goal-bound effort.

Despite Arsenal’s constant pressure and Eberechi Eze’s six long-range attempts, the league leaders struggled to find a breakthrough. Tension grew when Kai Havertz was denied a penalty after a challenge by Michael Keane. It looked like Keane stepped on Havertz’s foot, but VAR quickly turned down the appeal.

However, the 74th-minute arrival of Max Dowman changed the game’s complexion. In the 89th minute, his cross struck Jordan Pickford, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to tap into an empty net. The ball deflected off substitute Piero Hincapie before reaching Gyokeres.

In a frantic few extended final minutes, Everton sent their keeper Jordan Pickford forward for a corner. However, Arsenal cleared the ball from inside the box. This allowed Dowman to break away in a fierce run and score the second goal into an empty net.

At just 16 years and 73 days, Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the competition. This victory moves the leaders nine points clear of Manchester City. Notably, Arsenal have now netted 11 goals via substitutes this season, which is more than any other side. Meanwhile, Everton faced a total of 94 defeats in London. They now share the record of most Premier League defeats in London with Newcastle.

A Major Victory in London

The late goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Max Dowman secured a vital win for the hosts. While David Moyes was not pleased with the result, he noted the quality of Arsenal during the match. The rise of Dowman as a record-breaking scorer adds a unique chapter to this season. Ultimately, the result strengthens their place at the top of the table as the season nears its end.

ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Add Football Express as a preferred source on Google to see more of our reporting

Souvik Bose

Souvik Bose is a junior football writer at Football Express, where he contributes articles focused on ongoing developments and discussions from the football world.
